Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a digital meter?
Yes, you will need a digital meter (also known as smart meter, interval meter or comms meter) to sign up to the Night Saver EV plan so we can accurately measure your energy usage during the 12am-6am off-peak EV charging period.
If you don’t have a digital meter and want to sign up to the Night Saver EV plan, you can arrange to have one installed. In most cases, this meter upgrade is free and will take around 15 business days. Please note that if you upgrade to a digital meter, your local electricity distributor may update your property's network tariff. This could change the tariff type you receive from AGL, which impacts the rates you pay outside of the 12am-6am window.
What happens to my current Single rate or Time of Use tariff?
Single rate tariff
If you’re on a single rate tariff you can sign up to our Night Saver EV plan, provided you have a digital meter. You’ll get the Night Saver EV rate from 12am-6am and keep a single general usage rate at all other times of the day. The general usage will depend on where you live. To view the general usage rate for your address, see the above 'Our Rates’ section.

Time of Use (TOU) tariff
If you’re already on a TOU tariff, you can still sign up to our Night Saver EV plan. Your existing TOU tariff usage windows will remain, outside of the 12am-6am Night Saver EV Charger Bundle rate. These times depend on where you live, and who your network distributor is.

Controlled Load tariff
Our 12am-6am Night Saver EV rate does not apply to controlled load usage.
If you want to install your new charger on a controlled load circuit, then this plan is not suitable for you. Speak with one of our charger experts if you think this might apply to you. If you live in Queensland, see ‘important information for installing chargers in Queensland’ below.
For the EV Electricity Plan, what is considered an EV driver?
Our EV Plan is only available to customers who drive an EV. You’ll be considered an EV driver if you or a member of your household owns an EV, has an AGL EV subscription, or has an EV registered in the name of a business to which you or a member of your household have an association. See full conditions for details.
Will Queensland regulations impact the charger installation process?
Electricity distribution networks in Queensland have strict rules around the installation of EV chargers, which mean that if you want your charger to be capable of charging at full speed, it will need to be installed with some controls that are managed by your distribution network.  You can read about your options listed on the Ergon or Energex websites
To take advantage of our Night Saver EV rate, your charger will need to be installed using one of the "Primary Tariff" options listed on that page.
We'll work with your installer to make sure they talk through these options with you before progressing with your installation.
What is the difference between the Novated Lease and Novated Subscription
With an EV Subscription, you can enjoy the same tax-effective way of getting an EV as a novated lease but have the added flexibility at the end of your term - you don't get left with a balloon payment, simply hand the car back.

Novating is a form of salary packaging, meaning you pay with pre-tax salary, which can lower the amount of income tax you pay, reducing the out-of-pocket costs.
