What is the range of electric cars?

Like petrol cars, electric vehicles vary in how far they can travel before needing to be recharged. This distance is referred to as the car's "range", and it's influenced by things like the size of the car's battery and its overall weight.

Early electric vehicles had infamously short ranges, and many drivers still worry about how far they might be able to drive an EV before running into trouble. (This is known as "range anxiety".)

Thankfully, improvements in battery technology have seen EV ranges increase dramatically in recent years with many models boasting well over 400km. (The rollout of more and more public charging stations has helped matters, too.)

Range curious? We offer our subscribers an assortment of pure electric EV models and list the ranges for each vehicle.

According to the RACV, the average Australian drives 40km per day. Any of our cars could go that distance without breaking a sweat—though if weekend road trips and off-track adventures are more your cup of tea, you may want to consider the Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro or Tesla Model 3.
