Frequently asked questions

How do I use a public EV charger?
Charging your EV via public chargers will depend on the type of charging station used. For example some may require you have their app.

Here are the general steps:

Plugging in
  • If the charger doesn't have its own cable, connect your type 2 cable to the charging station. (All AGL EV Subscriptions come with a type 2 cable)
  • Connect the other end of the cable to the EV, typically there is a lock-in sound.

Commence charging  & payment
  • If the charging station is free or does not require an extra payment method, then the EV will start charging automatically.

  • If the charging station is not free, then check the instructions on the charger to confirm the available payment methods i.e. mobile app, credit card or dedicated charge card. For example, ChargeFox chargers can be used by adding your credit card to the ChargeFox app.

Check charging status
  • To confirm the EV is charging, check the charging status on your car's dashboard/display screen.
  • Chargers that use a mobile app to connect will usually show charging progress in the app.

Finish charging
  • When you want to end your charging session, select 'Stop charging' and/or 'Unlock cable' on your car's display screen and unplug the cable.
  • If you're using your own type 2 cable, unplug it from your car first and then from the charger, second.

  • Pros: No installation cost, can take anywhere, often free with the car.
  • Cons: Slow charging rate (2.4kW).

Level 2 Chargers

Level 2 chargers (AC) provide around 40-60kms of charge per hour using your regular household electricity.

  • Pros: Faster than a portable charger (7kW single phase / 11kW three phase), safer than a portable charger, convenience of charging while you're at home.
  • Cons: Cost to purchase and install the unit.

Level 3 Chargers

Level 3 chargers (DC) can charge a car up to 80% of its capacity in less than an hour.

  • Pros: Fastest way to charge (50-350kW), helpful when you're away from home.
  • Cons: Inconvenience of going out of your way to find a public charger location, cost per kW is usually higher than at home.
