How do I charge an electric vehicle?

The different electric vehicle charging options

You can charge your electric car using one of three types of charging stations: Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3. The main difference is how long they take to provide a full charge (with Level 1 being the slowest and Level 3 being the fastest).

Level 1
A Level 1 charging cable comes with your vehicle and allows you to plug your car into a standard power point. This will give you about 17kms* of range per hour charged.

Level 2
Level 2 chargers, such as Home Chargers, provide around 52kms* of range per hour charged for single phase (or around 76kms* for 3-phase), using your regular household electricity. To use this kind of charger you will need a Level 2 Cable. Some car manufacturers include the cable with the car but others have it as an optional extra. A cable is usually included when purchasing a home charger.

With an AGL EV Subscription there is an option to rent a Level 2 home charger for a weekly fee. You can also purchase a charger from our online store.

Level 3
A Level 3 charger can charge a car up to 80% of its capacity in less than an hour. They're expensive units to purchase and install so your best bet is to locate a public Level 3 charger using this handy map care of the Electric Vehicle Council.

Of course, charge times will vary from car to car (just as fuel efficiency differs between conventional cars).

*Figures used are based on a 2022 Tesla Model 3 RWD which has a rated consumption of 14.4kW/100km. 3-phase figures are given at 11kW as most EVs on the road today are not able to charge at the full 22kW that 3-phase can supply.
