How to use a public EV charger?

Charging your EV for the first time can be daunting and unfamiliar. Follow these steps to make your first EV public charging session easy.

Charging your EV via public chargers will depend on the type of charging station used. For example some may require you have their app. Generally, to charge an EV you:

  1. Plugging in
    • If the charger doesn't have its own cable, connect your type 2 cable to the charging station. (All AGL EV Subscriptions come with a type 2 cable)
    • Connect the other end of the cable to the EV, typically there is a lock-in sound.
  2. Commence charging  & payment

    • If the charging station is free or does not require an extra payment method, then the EV will start charging automatically.

    • If the charging station is not free, then check the instructions on the charger to confirm the available payment methods i.e. mobile app, credit card or dedicated charge card. For example, ChargeFox chargers can be used by adding your credit card to the ChargeFox app.

  3. Check charging status
    • To confirm the EV is charging, check the charging status on your car's dashboard/display screen.
    • Chargers that use a mobile app to connect will usually show charging progress in the app.

  4. Finish charging

    • When you want to end your charging session, select 'Stop charging' and/or 'Unlock cable' on your car's display screen and unplug the cable.

    • If you're using your own type 2 cable, unplug it from your car first and then from the charger, second.
